asked on

opening transparent.gif pop up while using Firefox

Hello,

While browsing the web with Firefox I receive a pop up asking me to open a transparent.gif. I have the options "choose a program to open with" or "save to disk." It does not happen on every page. It's quite annoying and it's happening on a few workstations. Has anybody been faced with this issue? Do you have a resolution?

Thank You

Hello subnet6,

1. An addon may be interfering with IE. Disable Addons.  Go to Tools > Add-on Manager, and uncheck the addons.

If you cannot open IE, start IE without addons.  Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons).

2. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced.  Click on "Reset" button. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

3. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

4. Uninstall and reinstall IE7. Make sure you have the latest updates.

5. Create a new user account in Windows.

Hope this helps!

OR you could just stop clicking on any spaces in the webpage.

Typically, you will get this when you have either purposefully clicked or accidentally clicked on a Image, or even, as you have found, a transparent (invisible) image.

Although, if your posted image above is correct, it looks like it is coming from your network anyway.
192.168.14.252, which it may if it is a local page.

Typically transparent gifs are used for tracking or to block actual underlying images from being downloaded.

Correction - "transparent (invisible) image"

not always invisible, but sometimes invisible backgrounds, actually same color as web page background.
