yes. Ieven copied sc.exe from my system32 folder on laptop andplaced it in my desktop sys32 folder - no luck laptop sc command works fine
Hmmmmmmm...

Not really my thing, but some quick looking around says it might be a Policy problem.
Will it work from the Admin account?
Check your Services on the Laptop and the Desktop, and see if anything interesting is running on the Laptop and not the Desktop.

Hmmmmm... I'm stumped.

The only other thing I can think of is to to reinstall SC on the desktop.
For some reason the XP on the desktop doesn't know what to do with SC.
But if it is just a corrupt file or a setting somewhere, I can't tell.

why putting on desktop? That didn't work

I meant reinstalling it on the desktop computer, not the screen image part.

If you type sc on its own does the usage list appear?

nothing happenshowever if I type full path to sc.exe in cmd mode - a bunch of info appears which of course I can not use.
Thank you much.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Curious why you accepted a non answer to a question well before the possibilities were exhausted? No matter. If you get a response to typing the full path, then something is amiss with your path variable. Click Start - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Environment Variables - System Variables (the lower portion of the window) - Click on Path - Click on edit - Ctrl+C (to copy). Cancel out. Paste the resulting string here (Ctrl+V). Something is missing if you have to type the path to something in system32. An entry like %SystemRoot%\system32 has to be there for the commands to run normally.

Thank you,

That was the answer to the solution the entire time.  That is placing a path in environment variables system 32 folder.  The sc command works perfectly.  The funny part is, now I forget why I even needed it :-) but at least it's working and stop "bugging" me.

I assigned points incorrectly, basically because I had two questions, and I thought I was doing the correct thing by answering the one about assigning points above.  Anyway, I would like to assign points properly to you for suggesting the correct answer and so others can find the correct answer.  If it happens to them. This is the "official" accepted answer that worked.

Thank you again,

his has been solvedby placing path variable  sys variables located under advanced tab in system perperties
Why would this be deleted? See the last two relevant posts -
