No of DC required for a 1000 user base

Our company has a user base of about 1000  and I want to know how many domain controllers I need so that I don't have any performance issues for the users when logging on.One my collegue recommends having 4-5 DC's but I am  sure that having more DC's won't increase the performance in regards to citrix users.Any ideas or suggestions.

And just to be clear, that was 3-4 DCs over two major sites (one 800, the other 200).

Thanks Guys for your comments

Is domain controllers on virtual machines any thing different to domain controllers on a normal physical box.
Out of the 2 DCs we have one DC which holds the profiles as well.
Not in my opinion... other than they rely on the physical host.  The one thing I'd recommend is make sure the host system does NOT control the time on the DC VM.  I had an issue with that myself and it caused time problems on the network.  In Virtual Server, I believe is an option in the config of the virtual server VM.

Otherwise, same thing - monitor performance.  Only throw money at hardware (or an additional VM on another system) when you are certain it's a resource problem and not a misconfiguration.
