Computer freezes up after about an hour or so

I am using a Compaq Presario desk top computer and it usually works quite well. recently , after about an hours use it just freezes up and I have to turn it off using the button on the tower as nothing is accessable even Task Manager wont work. I am using XP Home with a 186Gb hard drive and 500mb of RAM.
When using it all programs open , internet access is possible and I cant find anything software related that might be doing it. I would be very grateful for asistance in this matter.

Take the covers off & check all cooling fans are spinning freely.  It is common for fans to sieze, this will give the symptoms you describe. Possibly a CPU of video can fan has died.

Thanks , I did think of that but it seems the fans are working OK. can hear any buzzing as I have replaced faulty fans before. One thing that I did think of was the room temperature or the place the tower is situated in. The room gets very warm. Could this be a possibility?

Ok Malmensa

I think it got pretty hot in the room where I work and as i didnt hear any noise to indicate a failing fan I didnt go any further. It will be OK to start it up again whn it cools down so I thought of putting my PC in another room just to see if it makes a difference. Failing this I will replace the CPUU fan
