Event ID 1373 and 1528

Dear All,

We have two domain controllers and one of them is the global catalog. On this one I get every half hour event ID 1373 and 1528 (look at end for the event properties). Both are 2003 servers with SP2.

The events are about NTDS replication over SMTP. The half hour is correct because if I look at the schedule in Sites and Services the replication schedule is set to every half hour.

The first time the error occured is when I installed IIS including the smtp service (we want to run exchange 2003 on this server). When I deinstall the SMTP service the error disappears. The other server has already exchange on it (2003 version) and we want to migrate this one.

I already tried a lot of things. Reinstallation of IIS (including smtp), manually set the transport protocol for Inter-Site to IP (default is RPC) but it changes back to RPC, set SMTP as inter-site transport protocol, deleting the NTDS settings for both server and let them be recreated automatic by windows.

Under the Inter-Site Transports folder in Sites and Services there is only a default site link for IP. I have tried to solve the problem to make a default site link for SMTP but the errors stayed.

Has anyone an idea? Because I ran out..

Kind regards,

I have never heard of an intersite replication over SMTP. But, I guess it makes sense when clustering an Exchange server.

I was thinking there might be something blocking SMTP traffic on the, non GC server. Antivirus applications and Firewalls are the usual culprites. Have you tried to temporarily disable AV and Firewall to see if you have a block on SMTP port 25?
