Hierarchies in the Business Objects

Dear Sir / Madam,

I would like to have a drill down in the Business Objects reports and I am having three hierarchies in my business.

Like

1.      Location
2.      Organization
3.      Product.

-      Each level is having about 4 to 5 hierarchical levels.
-      Would like to have full drill down, drill up, drill across the hierarchies in the reports.
-      High query performance of the reports during initial refresh and during drill down operations.

I have two approaches for my requirements but not sure which approach is BEST.
Could you please let me know which is the BEST and gives high performance?
Currently we dont have any hierarchies in the current data model (not allowed for  data model - modification) and it consists of two to three FACT tables with many Dimension tables

Approach 1:

-      Define the custom hierarchies in the BO universe for Location, Organization and Product hierarchies.

-      These hierarchies are defined by adding different objects which are coming from 5 to 6 dimension tables in the universe schema

-      There are no hierarchies defined at the data model design, but will be going to define at the universe level.

Approach  2:

-      Define the required hierarchies at the data model level...like Location, organization and Product hierarchies lined to a FACT table by redesigning the data model.

-      Defined three hierarchies at the universe level just by selecting objects which are coming from these tables.

-      Using these hierarchies for drill down and drill ups in the BO reports.

Could you please let me know which approach is BEST and WHY?
What is the difference between these approaches in terms for analysis, drill down and high performance?

Kindly let me know your thoughts on the above requirement.

Thanks

So are you saying that one level of the heirarchy can be found in EACH of these 3 heirarchies?

I'm not sure I understand?  Please explain the need for the 3 Heirarchies...?

Thanks

OR..are these just LEVELS of ONE Heirarchy..?

ASKER

There are three different hierarchies, namely

1.      Location
2.      Organization
3.      Product

Further each hierarchy will have 3 to 4 levels; say for example Location will have

Region -> Country - > State ->District - > City levels....

Same way there will be 3 to 4 levels of hierarchies for Organization and Product hierarchies

I would like to use all these three hierarchies in my BO reporting.

Please let me know your feedback on approach 1 & 2.

Thanks

Why not just use a separate report for each Hierarchy? I don't understand what the problem is?

You really don't need them in the SAME reporting tab...just create ONE reporting tab...then copy it 2 times into other tabs and set your heirarchies up differently.

I suggest creating the Hierarchies in the UNIVERSE.

Please explain if I'm misunderstanding,...but again...I don't see the need to have 3 hierarchies in the SAME report.

Just create the 3 heirarchies in the UNIVERSE and use them whenever and how ever you need to...
