asked on

obtaining mail password from system

I have a XP system w/ office 03 installed.  My client has their mail settings setup for outlook and I am going to be migrating these setttings to another computer.  The client cannot remember her password as it is set to automatically login etc. Is there any way I can retrieve her password from this system? Is there some files that I can copy that will copy everything over in regards to her email settings - including, most importantly the password? Preferably I would like to just get a listing of her password for this pop3 account.  Obviously it is "*"d out.

Thank you.

Hello jeremycushing,

Account settings are in registry.  Copy your accounts settings: Open your registry editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

Export the entire Outlook key to a file. You've now backed up your email accounts. To restore the backup to another computer, simply import the backup into the new computer's registry. You may need to delete the Outlook key off the new computer first.

Hope this helps!
