Filemaker calculation using info from two columns

I have a list of shareholders and want to add a footer that totals the amount of common stock and preferred stock.  the terms 'common' and 'preferred' are in one column named 'type.'  the total amount is in another column named 'share amount'. i can't figure out how to do this.

thanks. i'll try that and let you know if it worked.
i think i would like to use the second part of your solution. that way i can always see a runningtotla of ecah class of stock. i do i create the summing fields.  sum(....?)
lastly, the 'sub-summary' doesn't show up on the list.  if i create a footer it does, but the sub-summary fields are not visible.
sub-summaries are only visible in preview mode or on printed docs.
as for the summaries, I'll do an example later on, no time now.
remind me if you don't get it on saturday.
