Is it possible to install exchange 2003 on a server running AD

I have a single windows 2003 server with AD being used as a file server.  I want to install exchange server 2003 on the machine.  I have been told this is not "best practice"  I understand the SBS allows AD, exchange, ISA and SQL on one machine but I want to add another server later in a cluster type enviroment.

Can I do this and what problems may I have

DONT. Putting exchange on a DC may seem attractive and as you say with SBS you have no option, however it causes great issues if you ever have a problem with AD or exchange for that matter. As you want to cluster the machines then I would steer well clear of havig them exchnage on a DC.
