Photoshop can't open/parse a file

I received several dozen Photoshop images on a CD. When I try to open some of them, I get a message that says  "Couldn't open file. may be corrupt or an unrecognized format." OR, "Photoshop can't parse the file." I have tried re-naming the file extension to TIF and EPS but no luck.  Is there a way around this or is it a corrupt file?

Lots of possibilities here, but one option is that the sender didn't maximize compatibility.  I've received cd's before (back before I had a mac) created on a mac that wouldn't open on a PC for anything no matter what I did...but the mac Photoshop opened them right up.  You might ask the sender if possible how they saved it (in what version, format, etc.)

The files were saved as TIFF and EPS on a PC server; they were then burned to CDs from a PC. He can open the files on the CDs, but I suspect he is linking back to the original file on the server.

Thank you for your help.

Yes, clients always manage to find a way to short-circuit the system, no matter how idiot-proof you think you've made it  ! : - )

Thanks again for your help!
