How to fix a USB 2.0 external HDD

I have a USB 2.0 external HDD that I bought.  It worked fine for 1 day, and then something went wrong.  The drive will not appear in My Computer, or in Disk Management.  It does seem to power up and spin fine.

I'd like to try to repair it by purchasing a new USB enclosure or something.  I'd like to know how I can access and verify that the drive is functional.  I'd also like to know if there's some kind of firmware in the USB enclosure that has become corrupted and could possibly be re-flashed or something.

Please advise.

i have a USB 2.0 IDE adapter so I removed the drive from the enclosure and connected it.  The drive did not show up on the computer but it did power up and spin.

I'm still convinced there's a way to get the drive to work.  I think the firmware or whatever it is that allows the drive to interface with the computer is just corrupted.  The drive worked fine for about 24 hours before it stopped showing up on the computer.  And during that time I was having some problems on the computer that were caused by another drive that always goes crazy and causes a windows delay write failure.  This other drive is the reason I bought the new one.
thanks for the update !
