I am running Activestate 5.8.8 and trying to write a script to perform the following

1. Connect to a Linux server
2. Get the latest timestamp of a log file
3. Check the log file for any errors (contains the word error inside)

Connect via what protocol?
Are you executing the script from a windows box?

I will be executing from a windows box.
Can we also make ssh connections?
You could use the Net::SSH module:
http://search.cpan.org/~ivan/Net-SSH-0.08/SSH.pm

Or the Net::SSH::Perl module, which works very much like Net::Telnet
http://search.cpan.org/~dbrobins/Net-SSH-Perl-1.30/lib/Net/SSH/Perl.pm
