Problems connecting to client server via VPN - Microsoft environment

My company is working on a project for a customer that requires remote access to their Windows server.

Our developer was able to create a VPN connection through the standard windows GUI and connect to their network.  However, when he tried to RD to the server, he got the "machine cannot be found" type of message.  He also cannot ping the machine by name from a command prompt.

I tried this from my macbook laptop running WinXP as a virtual machine and it worked flawlessly.  I can connect by VPN and remote right to the server.  I pinged it and gave the ip address that it resolved to the developer but he still cannot connect.

Thank you so much for any help

Hi,

Sorry - I had posted a reply a few days ago and for some reason, it must not have gone through.

I can't wait to try these suggestions.  However, I should have mentioned that I don't know much about networking.  Could you dumb down the instructions for me a little?  :)

Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it
All three steps given before have to be done in a CMD-Box, that's all. Just print the results here.
Hi guys, I ran through some tests - here is what I found...

As mentioned, I can connect and RDC to the client's server from my laptop, while our developer cannot.  So, I ran the tests from both his machine (located in Pakistan) and my own (located in USA, near client).

Here is what i get from an ipconfig when I connect from my laptop:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : [customer info here]

       Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface

       Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00

       Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

       IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.120

       Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

       Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.120

       DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101

                                           192.168.1.1

                                           192.168.1.101

                                           192.168.1.1

And here is what my developer gets...

Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : [customer info here]
  Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
  Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
  DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
  IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.124
  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.124
  DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
                                      192.168.1.1
                                      192.168.1.101
                                      192.168.1.1

Hopefully you will see something enlightening there.  To me, nothing jumps out at me - they look very similar.

Here is an interesting point.  I can, of course, ping the server with no problems.  When our developer does so, it cannot find the server.  The tracert does the same thing - works for me and not for him (cannot resolve...)

One final thing is that our developer connects to dozens of different client servers with no problems, using both the Cisco VPN client and the built-in windows VPN.

It's definitely confusing.  I can't see how it's a problem with the developer's machine, b/c he can connect to everywhere else with no problems.  However, I can't see how it's a problem with on the client's end b/c I can connect and RDC to their server without any problems.

I admit, I am baffled.  I'd really welcome any advice/suggestions.
thanks guys, I'm splitting the points (although, I never was able to resolve this issue... )  thanks so much
