Out of Range Error after xp reinstall

I have an HP Pavilion pc that was badly corrupted. I have just used the HP system restore utility to take it back to "day one". All seemed to go ok until I suddenly have a message on the monitor "Out of Range" H 54Khz V 86Hz Max 1280x1024.
I cannot use safe mode because it says "set-up not complete"
What can I do to recover this system please?

I cannot set the system to VGA mode because I cannot access safe mode because the recovery was not completed.  The problem occurred during a complete system restore using the HP recovery utility. No XP CD was supplied with this system. I certainly do have an XP Home Edition and a Pro Edition cd from other systems but not sure what HP pre-installed items will be lost if I do use one to run a repair install. The fault occurred before I was able to complete the full recovery (it got as far as the first light-blue welcome screen before the error appeared).
A repair install will not touch any 3rd-party software you had installed prior to the repair.
You will have to re-download and apply any Critical windows updates - including SP2 if your OS didn't originally come with SP2 integrated.

Not that I know of - HP do update their drivers frequently - normally to fix these kinds of bugs...
