Database file lost - how to recreate?

Hi.
I lost an entire server to a heavy hardware fault. System is W2KSP4 with E2KSP2 in German language.
I have an Acronis image of the servers system volume, which I restored to new hardware.  Server boots up fine, is patched again to current level and responds fine.
Exchange services are not running.  The databases used to be on a different disk, which I do not have an image of.
In order to restore my NTbackup backups, I need information store service to be running.  It is not running, though, because it is missing its databases.

I reinstalled Exchange and Servicepack 2 using the /disasterrecovery switch.  It didn't do anything for me, though.

I expect I am not the first person to have this problem, but Google is not cooperative and shows no hints to this question.

Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Ralph

What errors do you get when you try to start the SA service?

Hi Paka,
I get the issue describted in this knowledge base article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267573/en-us
Trouble is:  The described solution does not help.
This guy writes some excellent articles, here's one on the /disasterrecovery switch.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Failed-Exchange-2003-Member-Server-Using-Disaster-Recovery-Switch.html

The problem probably arose when you rejoined the domain - did you reset the account before you joined?

You might also try to disjoin and rejoin the domain and ensure your server is in the Exchange Domain Servers group and the Exchange Domain Servers is nested in the Exchange Enterprise Servers group.
I read that article before I posted the question.  I did not need to reinstall the server as I had the image and the machine, which holds the one and only replica of this active directory domain, was restored along with everything I need *except for the bloody database*

In the meantime I deleted the database files on a healthy machine to see what happens.  Apparently a new and empty database is created as soon as the service is started.

What I am looking at is apparently not a file-issue...
