Can I connect eSATA port on front of computer case to SATA port on mobo?

Looking to build a new system, have decided on a case that has eSATA port on front (an Armour VH6001).  Now researching diff motherboards.  All mobos I'm looking at have the "regular" internal SATA connectors, some have eSATA connectors on them also but a few do NOT.  Can I just run a cable from an internal "regular" SATA port to the back of the eSATA port on the computer case?  Or is eSATA totally different, and therefore requiring an eSATA port on the mobo to fire up the eSATA port on the front of the case?
