How do I connect a HD DVR box to my 22" LCD?

I have a Viewsonic vx2235 LCD monitor that I just replaced on my desk and now want to use to watch TV on in my office.  I have upgraded my Cable box to a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR and am trying to connect it to the LCD.  I have purchased a male HDMI to female DVI converter and plugged it directly into the back of the DVR box.  I then connected the DVI cable that came with the LCD from there to the DVI input on the LCD.
I have verified that the DVR box is working correctly by connecting it to another display via a S-Video cable.  But no matter what I do, I don't get any display on the LCD.  Is a special cable requied?  Or a special HDMI to DVI converter?  Alternatively, how can I confirm that my DVR's HDMI is compatible with the LCD panel's DVI?

OK, I let this slide for a couple of weeks because of problems getting Comcast to resolve some other issues.  The biggest issue was that, apparently, they disable to HDMI port on most 8300HD boxes while they are still at teh factory.  No clue why they would disable the HDMI port on an HD box, but they do.
I finally got it replaced with a 8300HDc box that is supposed to have the HDMI port enabled.  I brought the box home and plugged it in with a brand new HDMI to DVI cable (no longer using the adapter).  It still isn't working.  I have confirmed that the monitor is using the DVI port, but it sees no signal coming in.  I've also tried connecting it to a Dell 2005FPW monitor with no success.

Am I mistaken in thinking this should work?  What else should I try?

Well, after following all given advice, and learning alot about HDMI to DVI, I still don't have this working.  I've decided not to pursue it any longer and will, instead, just buy a small HD LCD panel.  I appreciate the feedback and effort.
