Outlook 2007 - Desktop alert when new mail comes.

In Outlook 2007...

I have it set up to where new messages will trigger a sound to play and a desktop alert to show when they arrive.  However, this feature is exclusive to messages arriving in the inbox.  The problem is, I have many rules set up on my system that filter messages into different folders as they arrive.  When this filtering takes place, even though an email arrives into the inbox before it is organized into the proper folder by the rule, there is no desktop alert of sound that plays.  Is there any way that I can make the new email alert occur on all new messages as they arrive regardless of the rules that I have set up?

There is an option in the rules and alerts of Outlook 2007 (Not sure if it is available in previous versions) that allows a custom message alert to display as action response to emails that come in.  The message however does not display as the small message in the lower right hand corner of the screen that appears and then disappears after a few seconds.  It opens up in an actual window in the middle of your screen and forces you to click 'ok' before it will go away.  This will work, but I would rather have the same type of alert as when an item comes into the Inbox.

Wrong Wrong Wrong

In both Outlook 2003 and 2007, as part of the Rules & Alerts you can assign it to play a specific sound or pop-up message as part of that rule.

You can have more than one option besides just moving certain emails to specific folders.

I can't believe no one else caught this.
Ummm, there is actually a rule you can setup in Outlook to work around this little problem.  Here are the steps:

Create a generic rule with no conditions and just the action to display the Desktop Alert.

   1. Tools-> Wizards and Alerts.
   2. Button New Rule.
   3. Select Start from a blank rule and verify that Check messages when they arrive is selected
   4. Press Next to go to the Conditions screen
   5. Verify that no condition is selected and press Next
   6. A warning will pop-up stating that this rule will apply to all messages. Press Yes to indicate that that is correct
   7. Select the action display a Desktop Alert
   8. Press Finish to complete the rule
   9. If needed move the display a Desktop Alert rule all the way to the top

Hope this helps, this problem was bugging me forever!
gmacdonald, THANK YOU.

I too have my Outlook organized into a bunch of folders with rules to auto-organize everything and it bugs me that I don't get the Desktop Alert.  I never noticed that this was an option for a rule.

It works great.
Thanks GMACDonald - now I know why I subscribe to Experts Exchange. For some reason - no google search helped on this one.
