XP Welcome screen flashing on and off during boot when 2nd monitor connected

I have a Gigabyte X1550 Radeon graphics card that has two monitor outputs - one 15pin D SVGA and one DVI connector - I also have two identical AOC 17" TFT monitors with 15pin D SVGA connectors. When I connected the 2nd monitor and booted they both wokred perfectly displaying exactly the same image. I then used the display properties settings tab to set the right hand monitor to be an extension of my XP desktop. This works perfectly. Now whenever I boot up the computer the XP welcome screen login flashes on and off for the duration of the logging in with a frequency of about 1 Hz ie half a second on - half a second off - although it is not very regular. I can still move the cursor with my mouse and log in although during the off phase mouse movements have no effect on the pointer position - the pointer only moves during the on phase - once logged in after a few seconds the display stabilises and the desktop is displayed correctly (ie with the RH monitor as an extension of the left)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might stop this very annoying flashing

thanks

Yes - that worked - I updated the driver for the primary monitor by selecting "update driver" from the device manager and after searching on the windows update it found a new driver that I installed  - I rebooted and the problem has disppeared. Thanks for the suggestion
thanks
Glad you got it working and thanks for the points,

I have a similar issue with an NVIDIA card except it the flashing starts at the first display. BOIS display is flashing. So I tend not to suspect windows drivers. They in fact seem to be all that's RIGHT. Once the XP-start-up reaches the blue-background  screen, (just before the login prompt) the flashing stops. And it's all good. the issue is if it IS a BIOS setting that's the issue, then it's going to be a b'ch to make any change...
It may be that your monitor can not display the resolution properly during post (boot up) if it works in XP I would say you are OK.

nah. I think I broke something. the monitor-card-resolution were fine for a good while. I was having a (most likely) unrelated issue and I "hot-plugged the DVI connector. Apparently they're a tad more sensitive to that than a typical D-sub/VGA. But I may also have diddled something in the bios about the same time. since then it's been kinda had to check that. I'd have to put in a different card since this box ain got no "on-board" video.
Thanks for your input I know I should start another question.
