Well at first there are some things you need to keep in mind when trying to RDP.
If your mate sits behind a router, you'll have to open up the ports on his router (3389) and forward that to your friends' IP.
Furthermore he needs to enable Remote Desktop connection and add a user (or give you the Admin password) to connect into the computer.
Your friend can tell you what IP he is using by surfing to www.whatismyip.com.
When you do all of the above and use his IP to make a connection through Remote Desktop, you should be succesful.

What OS does your friend have on his machine (and what is yours)... as that makes a world of difference.... if your friend is running XP Home, RDP will not work, as it is not running as a service.. just a client..
Could install TightVNC, which I use if I have to connect to a XP Home system.. (I use other means for different circumstances...)
Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!

The Windows operating systems have distinct methodologies for designing and implementing networks, and have specific systems to accomplish various networking processes, such as Exchange for email, Sharepoint for shared files and programs, and IIS for delivery of web pages. Microsoft also produces server technologies for networked database use, security and virtualization.
