Can't scan to e-mail from Sharp Copier

I am having an issue with Scan to Email functionality on the Sharp AR-M450N copier/scanner/fax. I am receiving error code CE-00 when trying to scan to email.  I can ping it over the network and can still send print jobs to it via network, but it will not scan and send to email via network without getting the error code CE-00.  I have setup the smtp address in the network setup on the copier.

First I have not used many Sharps so I am not as knowledgeable about them as others but can you get to the copier via it's IP in a browser?  If so have you set up the email and DNS settings in there?  Can you scan to a folder on your network?

The manual is singularly useless in describing your error. It just says that "An error other than the above has occurred", with "other" indicating an FTP problem, which is beside the point here. It also says that error will be emailed to you - while it's unable to email...

Are you sure the smtp server you entered is correct? Check that it is the same as the one you use in your email (Outlook, etc) setup. Also, does your smtp server require a login/password to connect? Not many do, but it is possible; in that case the copier will need a login too. If you are indeed getting the error via email, that would imply your setup is correct.
An error CE-00 means that it is not connecting to the host, which can either be your exchange server or your ISP's SMTP server.   If your DNS isn't setup properly than just use the IP address of your exchange server or ISP's SMTP server.
Thanks for confirming my suspicion, davistech.

I am having the same error - The maual says cable error connectivity. I can pull up the web management and print to it. Just cannot scan. All test of connectivity withing the webmanagement page to exchange server pass!!! This just started from one day off the other. A possible AD dns issue? Everything else on the network works fine.
Intlram,

Usually this means that you misconfigured your settings on the copier.  Type the copier IP address in your browser and double check your dns / smtp settings in their.  Generally, Sharp copiers do not like named SMTP servers (mail.whatever.com) so do nslookup and find the exact IP address and place it in there.
Hopefully this helps.
Hmmm. this was our thinking as well. We have 3 sharp copiers they all have the same problem. they are all different models. No one has changed anything in the copier settings or DNS.
Anyhow. We rebooted everything a few times and changed the mail server from
mail.???.com to the ip but when that happened I received error "[973]: Incorrect format for Primary SMTP server"  in sharp quick settings browser. Only things with words are accepted like the name of the exchange server or exchangeservername.loc or mail.???.com - no ip addresses. Everywhere else you can put in the ip address just not in the SMTP settings?
With the severname.loc "selected servers not found" on copier lcd.
With just the exchange server name - on copier lcd CE-00
with mail.???.com - on copier lcd CE-00
pinging exchange server from copier lcd panel works
Work around for now is to scan to a network folder on a common share. That works. I'm guessing this is a DNS problem of some kind.
What Sharp copiers do you have.  I work for a Sharp dealer, and I can look in the service manual and find the direct meaning of the ce code for each and try to narrow it down for you.
Thats odd that it won't let you use the IP address for smtp.  Are you entering it as xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or as http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx? It should be just xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Thanks davistech - here is what solved it but don't ask why since there were no changes to anything and all had been working for 1 year.
All I had to do was check RARP box on each machine.
the machines involved were
MX7000N
4501N
MX-5500N
same resolution fixed each machine.
davistech solved the problem. Case should be closed
Had to post this even though it is closed because none of the suggestions helped me but I stumbled on a solution for my case.  The model is a Sharp AR-M257.
I have several Sharp MFP devices at different locations and all are set up to scan through our email server using a special account I have just for this purpose.  I have all of them setup using the external IP address of our Exchange server (not its name or FQDN) and I have firewall rules setup to allow SMTP from the WAN IP addresses of our different offices to the LAN IP address of the Exchange server.  It worked at all the others but this one.  I was getting the following error when trying to send a status message (under Log) from the device to my email account as a test:  [error 973] incorrect format for primary smtp server.  And when I tried to scan through our email server I would get “network error”.  However, a connection test succeeded.  I had everything set correctly for SMTP and DNS but as I was trying anything I could to get it working I went to mDNS under Services and it was enabled.  I disabled it and then I could get a status message to be sent to me and we could send a scan through our email server.
swomack2 That did the trick for me !!
 Thanks
also make sure you have a valid email address set as the main scanners reply to address.
We had an internal address and our scan to email (external outbound ) would get rejected because of that.
