Unable to print over network connection.

I am unable to print to our Lexmark C750dn printer over our LAN.  I have configured the printer correctly (as far as I can see) - I assigned it an IP Address, Mask and Gateway, I can ping it without problem, I can even "talk" to it using the MarkNet Printer Configuration Software.  However when I attempt to print to the server after setting up the printer in any of our machines, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP - the print times out and reports a generic printer error - nothing of value is reported in the machines logs.

I contacted Lexmark Support and here is what they said to do:

1.Turn the printer OFF
2.Press and Hold RIGHT + SELECT + GO Menu  buttons simultaneously.
3.Turn the printer ON.
Relase the buttons once it shows resttings factory defaults.

Now try priting.
---
Then after I told them that I did that already; they said to try this:

Go to printers folder. Select the lexmark driver, right click on it and then click on Properties.Select Ports tab. Click on Add Port, select Lexmark Enhanced TCP/IP port, click on New port.Click on Port Name ,IP address of the printer.Click on Ok.
Now try to print.  If it does not help then please try to install a system driver and then try to print.
---
I have tried using the Standard TCP/IP Port as well as the Lexmark Network Port and neither seems to make a difference.

I should add that printing via USB is not an issue, and I realize I could just share it via the machine it's connected to; however I purchased the printer with the NIC so that I could use it over the network.

I have pretty much given up on Lexmark being able to help with this.  This issue has been on my "list of things to do" for quite some time, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark,

Thanks for your comment, to answer your question, I did it both ways, on different systems.  Both Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP Pro SP2.  Neither worked.

Regards,
Jim

Thanks for the advice wyliecoyoteuk; however still no joy.

The error I am getting is "There was an error found when printing the document "Test Page" to C750DN. Do you want to retry or cancel the job?"

The weird thing is the Event logs are reporting that the page printed.
"Document 2, Test Page owned by administrator was printed on Lexmark C750 PS3 via port C750DN.  Size in bytes: 39311; pages printed: 1"

This has really got me stumped, and it looks like I devalued this problem, so I am increasing the point value to 500.

Regards,
Jim

I should add that error was on Windows Server 2000, on Server 2003 the message is "This document failed to print" - Document name: 'Test Page', Printer name: 'Lexmark C750 PS3', Time sent: 14:48:23 4/6/2008."

However in the Event Log it shows:

Event Type:      Information
Event Source:      Print
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      10
Date:            4/6/2008
Time:            14:50:11
User:            NETAXCESS\netman
Computer:      NS2
Description:
Document 4, Test Page owned by administrator was printed on Lexmark C750 PS3 via port C750IP.  Size in bytes: 65536; pages printed: 1
You say you have the USB and network connection?
That could be the problem. Many MFDs will only allow USB OR network connection, not both simultaneously.
Well I disconnected the printer from the USB, and still no joy.  Same errors.
Do you by chance no what port for Raw Settings I am supposed to be using?
I have an update:

After installing and configuring the printer on a Windows 2008 Server we are running on our lab, the following error was returned:

Log Name:      System
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-PrintSpooler
Date:          4/6/2008 4:44:28 PM
Event ID:      6161
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          NETAXCESS\jim.restucci
Computer:      NETSVTS01SS.netaxcess
Description:
The document Test Page, owned by jim.restucci, failed to print on printer Lexmark C750 (MS) (Network). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 196608. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\NETSVTS01SS. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 2250. This network connection does not exist.

Any ideas?  I can ping the printer from this machine all day without error, and I disabled the firewall to make sure it wasn't that.

Regards,
Jim
Thank you both for your help on this.  Although neither of your solutions worked, they should have, so I have split the points.  We are actually going to stay with USB shared over the network, as this works :-)

Hi Jim,

I know you have already dished out points on this and I am grateful but you have still not resolved your issue.   One other thing you might want to try if you have not completely given up is to do the following.

Sorry, I was just going to recommend trying to use a standard TCP/IP port instead of a network install but I have just re-read your original post.

I would suggest ringing Lexmark Tech Support and persevering with them.  I have found that if you do get stroppy with them you will eventually speak to someone who know what they are talking about.

Failing all that I would go back to your supplier and give them a hard time.  At the end of the day, you have paid for a network printer.  It should not be this difficult to get it to work and they should be supporting you.

Good luck with this,

Mark.
Mark:

Thanks, I plan on doing just that.  We have owned the printer for over a two years now, and to be honest, this really was a long shot, I tried like heck to get it to work when we first got it and finally gave up, but you are correct, I need to make Lexmark earn the money we dished out for this monster :-)

Thanks again!!
Thanks for the points.
The RAW port is usually 9100 or 10001

Have you tried using LPR?

queuename is usually print, auto, passthru or port1

also Markvision appears to use SNMP if you have a router , managed switch  or windows ISA proxy running, that can be blocked.
Try printing directly from one PC using a crossover cable, if that works, something is blocking things
Good points wyliecoyoteuk, I will try the LPR, as for Windows ISA, not running it, and this machine is behind all firewalls, software firewalls on specific machines that I tested were disabled during the tests.

Thanks again, I will keep the both of you posted.
As for the points, you both earned them :-)  I wish I had joined this place a long time ago, I am having loads of fun answering off the wall questions :-)
