Microsoft Licensing Issues

I've got a funny problem here with CAL's. I have 30 fixed nodes (not counting servers) and 40 CAL's installed on my DC. I have one server I use for MS Dynamics and a few shared folders. Recently, users have been denied access to the shares at certain times and unable to logon to Dynamics from their workstations. I identified the problem as a licensing issue and when I restart the licensing service it lets them in for a period of time. (I'm getting event ID 201 on the server in question - No license was available for user _____ using product SMBServer 5.2.  Use Licensing from the Administrative Tools folder to ensure that you have sufficient licenses.)

Here's the problem - I have more than enough licenses for my network. I have more licenses than I currently have fixed nodes so I don't know how this is even a problem. When I open up Licensing on my DC it shows that I have 40 installed and max usage at 20. When I open up licensing on my Dynamics server though it shows that 40 are installed but that I'm at -13 for Per Server Reached.

I've also been getting Event ID 213 - Replication of license information failed because the License Logging Service on server \\SERVER could not be contacted. This preceded the user lockouts. Any idea what the deal is and how I can fix it? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Are you using per device or per user client access licensing?
If you're using per user (not per client sorry about that) licensing then you're going to have problems because the licenses are being used up, Especially if people are using more resources.   Per device is better in this case because each device is given a license to use.

Licensing is setup as Per Server, not Per Device or Per User...

This was the scheme implemented before I came along...

Also, it says that you have ONE change available to you.  So if you so choose, you have a chance to move toward the CAL option for devices vs server.

**The number of Windows CALs required equals the maximum number of users or devices that may simultaneously access or use the server software installed on a particular server. The Windows CALs you acquire are designated for use exclusively with a particular server.**

Well, the way my License console on this server reads is that there are presently 56 connections - that would account for the -16 licenses available. Which is impossible b/c I don't even have that many PC's on my network.
This is true, however you may have that many resources being used that require a license.  Each device, unless you're using per device licensing, will require a license for each actiuvity that requires one.

Well how can I find out what "activities" are responsible for this? The only thing this server is used for is Dynamics and printing...

I only have 5 active sessions on the server right now - 5 users are consuming 56 licenses? I find that puzzling...
Is this server acting as a terminal server?  Could there be open connections which have yet to be reset?  If this is the case then the easiest solution is to set a time out or ensure that your users are properly disconnecting.  This is an issue we were running into with our Dynamics terminal server.

No, but I do have Dynamics published out on my Citrix server. This server is running RRAS, but it's not currently in use. TS is being used in an administrative capacity, that's it.
