Is there a b/W HP laser that does not use DOT4?
Hi,
I appreciate any help on this matter. We have a 2000 Terminal Services/Citrix Metaframe XP environment. We will be testing the newer versions of both but due to a complex setup we will not be moving to this quickly. The HP 1012 is the model we are using at retail locations to print end of day reports.
For the most part I have been able to get the DOT4 port uninstalled where needed by deleting registry entries and uninstalling dot4 support from device manager. Also, we were able to avoid dot4 hell by making sure on initial printer detection we would ensure USB printing support was installed vs. DOT4 USB printing support. I have to admit it is a bitch to deal with because sometimes the DOT4 support is installed automatically as soon as the printer is plugged in. We have tried to disable windows from this behavior w/no luck.
I put in a request to HP to find an HP printer that does not use DOT4 but have not heard back. I will be looking at Lexmark but we prefer to stick w/HP if we could find a non-DOT4 b/w LaserJet. The MS article that describes redirecting ports for use in terminal services is supported only in 2003 (and just to note that has not worked on 2003 server in 2 tries either AFAS DOT4 ports) so it will not benefit us in this scenario. The HP1012 is the type of model/price we are looking for. If anyone has found such a model I would appreciate knowing this info. Thanks in advance.

I have looked at the HP list but whether or not the printer prefers to attach itself to a DOT4 port is the real issue. Unfortantely the document doesn't distinquish much on ports. HP seems to think that DOT4 USB printing support is identical to generic USB printing. To put it bluntly the DOT4 port is unacceptable.
Since these printers are being used to print reports only once a day and are only used by 1 remote user on 1 machine (the reports are generated by the remote citrix application and printed locally). There isn't a need for network printers and that would be hard to justify for a cost at x # of locations. Usually the same printer version w/network cabability is roughly $100 more. Ideally a plain jane printer that doesn't know what DOT4 is would be ideal....

Depending on the Citrix version you have you can also use their universal printer driver.
Even HP has an universal driver for same of their Laser printers and that may do the trick for you as well.
If you decide not to use an universal printer solution than your best option is indeed to use a printer that is listed as supported on the list I gave you the link for. These will work for sure.

we are still using metaframe XP, but the driver is not the issue. We could use hp laserjet 4 driver on our terminal server w/any number of printers probably w/the 1012 too. The issue is local. It is finding a printer that does not attach itself like a nat on an old dog to a branded-HP port when we setup new or re-setup one of these locations.
I have to do clean installs, just to get around the sad scenario where a usb printer is plugged in and I watch windows add the printer in onto the DOT4 port w/no opportunity for me to stop it. And once its in there forget it, you are screwed.
so a solution, if it exists, will make our overall configuration less complex because a simple usb port will redirect in 2000 terminal server w/no problem. Many of the approved printers will work ,but which ones use dot 4 locally (that are like the 1012) and which ones don't? We are using the parallel port allready for a receipt printer.

All the printers on the list from HP are there because they work with TS/Citrix, meaning there are no issues preventing them to work on the CLIENT and on the SERVER side. Again, as long as the printer is indeed on that list and the drivers specified there are the ones you are using, you should be ok.
And if it does not work then you can indeed complain to HP/Citrix as you will be using a printer both companies endorse as compatible with their platforms.

Thanks for you responses. Claudio, I am sure that HP is aware that dot4 will not work in a 2000 term envirnoment, but it is on the list because it does work on USB. My problem has been getting it to install on USB locally, consistently, without spending so much time on removing it if it does install on DOT4.
Bol, a good point, one that we will take in consideration on our next model. We have used the P2015, just not in term/citrix scenario. thanks, again.
