One of my MacBook users intermittently suffers from email send outages.  His setup: MacBook w/Leopard & MS Office 2008 w/Entourage 2008.  His email account is on a hosted 2007 Exchange server at Intermedia.net.  The outages occur at his home office - DSL via Qwest.

Note that he can receive email but cannot send.  The full text of the error message is:

HTTP error.  Message could not be sent

Reason:  Mail could not be sent. The message has been moved to your Drafts folder.

Account name: "Intermedia Exchange"

Note also that "Intermedia Exchange" is simply the local name of his Exchange account.

Intermedia's tech support points me to this KB article:    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947699

I am disinclined to believe this describes the issue because a) he does receive email during the outage and b) he does get an error message.

Also and perhaps unrelated - this same user suffers a situation whereby his email in his Exchange inbox mysteriously disappears.  For example today upon returning to his machine after being away for an hour or two all of his inbox mail was missing.

And finally - I have two other @home MacBook/Leopard/Office+Entourage 2008/Exchange users.  Neither suffers any such email send outage nor do they have disappearing email problems.

My thanks for your thoughts.

Sounds like it could be a corrupt database issue.  I would setup a clean identity in Entourage (entourage menu - Switch identity...), setup the Exchange account and pull all of the data back into the fresh database.

On Intermedia, make sure for "Exchange Server" you enter as:
owa015.msoutlookonline.net/exchange/user@emailaddress.com and check the SSL checkbox.  This solved some of our users' issues with this provider.

I appreciate the response.  It has taken awhile to get back as this is an intermittent problem.  We had a bit of an outage this morning finally.  A stop/restart of Entourage did not immediately resolve the issue at least from the feedback I got.  That said I did get an all clear message some two minutes later so perhaps the restart effort did clear the problem.

We have not yet taken the new identity step that is next.

Also just FYI we are running with the SSL box checked.  We are on the #3 Intermediate server so all our server IDs start with owa3. rather than owa15.

I did note during many and several trace routes I had this user run that we were hitting msoutlookonline.net not the expected Intermediate.net.  Your message is confirmation that I am not crazy in this regard.

BTW not sure I mentioned this - a traceroute when there is no problem and a traceroute during an "outage" are very similar.  And neither shows any significant latency at any hop.

I ask your patience please before I accept as a solution again simply because the problem is intermittent and testing time is limited.
