What does the GREEN TEXT mean in Vista? I can't transfer or open even as Admin.
I have a large amount of files I downloaded from a program I bought. They make you download it 1 .mov at a time and are all on seperate web pages, so I don't want to download the again. I put all of the files on a back-up drive and bought a new computer. Now when I go to get the files over half are in green text. All of the other files transfer right over, but the green ones won't move. I tried to move them one at a time and I go through 2 "approval" questions and confirm I am the Admin - still won't move. Can someone please tell me what the green file color means and how to get them from my back-up drive. This is very urgent - I need an answer fast or will have to start redownloading.

Normally, green text for file names means the files have been encrypted with EFS (Encrypted File System).
Thanks for the very fast reply, but that doesn't tell me how to fix it. It has a couple really mad people asking about XP to Vista and differnt EFS Keys, but mine is a Vista to Vista problem. These downloads were NT done on XP. Is there a way to remove the encryption if that is what the green titlwe means. Still wierd how only half the files in each folder were green. The other half are completely normal?

Normally, in order to decrypt an encrypted file you have to have the key, which is supposed to be backed up by the user who encrypted it. A bit more about EFS on Vista:
OK- from your last post I see that I somehow encrypted these - I still don't know how though? I HAD Vista Ultimate on my old machine and that is where it must have happened. I have not upgraded this PC to Ultimate and am still using Home Premium. However the heck this happened - it looks like it messed me over. I don't know of any KEY and I don't have any CERTIFICATE, so I am guessing all my content is lost? Very nice of Microsoft to make it so easy to encrypt half your files without you even knowing! I should have stuck with XP or bought a Mac. Any other ideas or do you agree that I am out of luck and should start re-downloading?

I think you'll have to download a non-encrypted version of your files, because neither Home Premium nor Home Basic support EFS. I have heard of one commercial program that has been recommended at E-E several times in questions I've seen that can supposedly be successful in decrypting XP encrypted files, but I don't know whether it would work with Vista. If you want, I can try to hunt down the name of that program...

did u try changing ownership of the files in properties>>security tab>>advanced button>>>> owner tab>>>edit>>>select your name>>>apply
LeeTutor: That would be great - I would sure give it a try.

Malnayil: Yes - That was the first thing I tried. It had no effect, but thanks for the try.

Lee - Any luck finding that program? They are sending me warnings about inactivity and I would like to shut this down as there does not seem to be a solution.
So I have this isue occuring, however, i am using ultimate, attached to a domain, I moved over some folders from The desktop to the my doc folder and now that folder is in green and ramdom folders have also come up in green. We never encrypted.
Here's a page about EFS in Vista and XP:
