Mouse Cursor Goes crazy back and forth bug

Hello, I have a laptop running on Windows XP. All of a sudden, in the past 3 days, the mouse on the screen goes crazy, going left and right out of control without reason or logic. Any ideas how to fix this? I cant even click on one thing, because the cursor keeps moving. This problem is driving me nuts!

Does this laptop have one of the pointing sticks?  Looks like an eraser in the middle of the keyboard?  This is a common flaw with these.  Check the manufacturer for a driver or BIOS update to help address the issue.

This could be a problem with viruses/trojans/spyware or other malware. Some free online virus scanners:

http://housecall.antivirus.com

http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Also try these free programs to rid your system of spyware, trojans, and other malware:

Spybot - Search & Destroy

http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet
LavaSoft Ad-aware

I use BOTH of the above programs on my 3 Windows systems; what one program misses, the other catches.  Also make sure to download the most up-to-date data before you run the programs.

Another very good freeware program for ridding yourself of spyware is this:

It's not a virus - driver issue. If it's a usb mouse - unplug it from it's current usb port, plug it into another one. That'll take care of it.

Are you using an external mouse or just the touchpad?
If a mouse, is it USB or wireless?
If wireless, try changing the battery or resetting it by pressing the reset on the bottom of the mouse
If USB, try the suggestion by saashka
If no mouse, try turning the touchpad off then back on via the Fn key control
Usually, this is accomplished by holding Fn key and pressing one of the Function keys. There is typically a little icon on the Function keys to show what they do. Look for a little touchpad, mouse, or pointer, for example.
