Fibre Channel Hard Drives vs SAS

Hello All,

I was talking to an HP rep. He basically told me I can use either SAS or Fibre Channel hard drives.

My understanding was that in a Fibre Channel SAN, you will use SAS, SCSI or SATA drives. WHat is a Fibre Channel hard Drive? and how does it comepare in speed and performance to a SAS drive?

So basically when people say Fibre drives they mean FATA...?

Lonewolf70

No, that's why he asked if you meant FATA or FC.  It's very likely that they were referring to true FC when they said FC.  If you hear the term "near-line," they are referring to FATA.
aleghart

FATA is the economy drive.  Not a direct replacement for FC drives.

They were designed for environments where economical hardware costs outweigh performance parameters.

General file storage, online archives, low-turn large sized graphics files, backup files, or even a budget-minded production environment.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

I see...
"FATA is essentially FC attached disk drive with dual porting similar to a regular FC disk drive. The big difference is in the price and lower performance"
Thanks gentlemen
