Permissions issue connecting SharePoint Designer 2007 to a MOSS site

G Morning,
I am trying to set up a new sharepoint dev site and cannot get SharePoint Designer to connect to the site with anything besides the service account. I have built a group in the site (called it Designer) and have given it both Full & Designer perimission.
Everytime I try to File>Connect to Site>type in AD account & password i get the 'You do not have permission to connect to this Web Site' error.
What am i missing in the set up to cause this issue?

You need Farm Administrator rights in order to make changes to the Portal.  At least this is the case in my experience.

To add yourself as a farm administrator, go to Central Administration > People and Groups: Farm Administrators.

I have read that Designer should be able to do it and would prefer a permission with a little less power than Farm.
We have consultant about to log in for a short stink and would rather not give them the keys to the whole server.

Thanx for the input Dale,
I will just have to threaten the consultants with torture and back up the site nightly...lol

I guess i will also just voice my concerns to Microsoft so they will make look at this issue.

Thanx for you time
