Microsoft updates are failing.

Good afternoon Experts,

I have a computer running Windows XP Pro with SP2 running on it.  It is a member of our domain.  Lately, Microsoft Updates have been failing with  Error Code: 0x8007F004.  The research that I have conducted leads me to believe that this is a permissions issue (or lack thereof).

I have also tried repairing Windows on this box, but when i try to run the setup.exe file from my windows cd, I get the following error:  "You must be an administrator to run this application".  I have checked and I am a member of the 'Administrators" group.  I have also tried to run setup as the local administrator and as the domain administrator but both fail.  I'm thinking that the two are related.  Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

not always easy getting past this but let have a go..

If your concerned it a permissions issue I've had this work (ensure your administrator) (script at the end of post)
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1620978-2.php

But first remove your Windows Update Cache C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
empty both the datastore and download dirs.
and redownload the update fresh.

Clean up the drive first too, Cleanup temps etc..

Turn Virus protection and Everything else you can off..

See how we go, feedback any eventlogs that you think could be relevant.

Thanks, jcimarron.  This has helped on most of my domain pc's that were having this issue, but I think the others have deeper issues.  I used the first article in your post and used the Dial-a-Fix utility.  thanks again.

dmbonilla4--You are welcome.  I have never used Dial-a-fix (and hope never to have to) but I see many people are having good results with it.
