internal and external CD/DVD drives don't work

A Dell XPS 410 has an internal Sony CD/DVD RW that has a yellow asterisk in front of it in Device Manager.  Uninstalled, rebooted, and installed via Plug and Play twice, still yellow asterisk.  Went to Plan B which was an external CD/DVD RW by HP.  Same result, same attempts to fix.  The internal player is SATA the external player is USB.

Any clues?

Bingo!  No upper filters present but deletion of lower filters did the trick.

Geez, I had all but forgotten about the filters in the registry.  Thanks for the reminder.
