owa broken

OWA faile dthis morning and i cant fix.

active sync still works.

but any attempt at owa or omw gets a http 500 error.

i went through a few KBs on checking permissions all were correct

I do have an article mentioning delete the Virtual directories and restart sys attendant and they will all come back.

but before going that far   any ideas?

owa is on a exchange 2003 sp2 FE server  windows 2003 sp2

of interest all the vdirectories have a appliction icon rather than a virtual directory one,  even when i  make a new VD it has this icon..

The 500 status message just means 'something went wrong on the server'.  You will need to find a more specific error message.  If nothing more is displayed in the browser, go into your IE Advanced Options and make sure that 'Friendly HTTP Errors' are NOT enabled (they hide the most useful information).  If, after doing that, you don't see anything more informative, have a look in the server's Event Log (Application Log), and see if anything is recorded there.
