IIS SMTP Queue Timeout

Guys, im setting up some anti-spam solution on a server 2003 box in DMZ running IIS v6.0 with the SMTP component installed & then relay to an internal exchange 2003 box on corporate lan.

I just want to be clear about the retry periods and queue holding time.

1) Can someone tell me what the difference is between Outbound & Local expiration timeout?
2) Do the "outbound" retry periods actually affect mail flow in both directions... so if the exchange on the corporate lan was down it would retry after 15mins (default) and the same being if the internet link was down it would retry delivery to the 3rd part mail server after 15mins?

Outbound pertains to any email being sent outside of your domain
Local pertains to any email being sent inside your domain

Outbound retries only affects outbound (sending) mail outside of your domain

So what determines the queue holding time for mail destined for the Exchange?

Also that link doesnt work

That would be the outbound settings on the anti-spam solution configuration.  I am assuming the anti-spam solution is considered outside of your domain...

Sorry i should have noticed that myself really!

Yeah basically im running Vamsoft ORF anti-spam on the DMZ box (not part of the domain) which relays mail to the Exchange box on the Internal net.

Strange thing is there arent any retry/expiration settings on the app itself, so im wondering whether it just relies on the IIS SMTP for this. Im thinking maybe the local expiration timeout might apply to the incoming mail that Vamsoft holds until the exchange would be back up.
