I am using Word 2003 to auto-generate the table of contents. However, once in a while, I'll have an entry that does not right-justify the page number. Instead, the page number will display immediately after the header (see example in file attached). How do I fix this?
This happens because the heading text is very short. Check to see if there is a tab stop in the TOC1, TOC2, etc. style definition. Just turn on the ruler, move the cursor into the relevant paragraph, and look at the ruler. If you see a tab stop at the spot where the page number sits, pull the tab set off the ruler to remove it. If this solves the problem, make sure to save the redefined style in your template for future use.

I'll give this a try on Monday when I go back to work. Thanks!

I don't have a tab stop in the style definition. However, I do have some interesting markings on the header that isn't formatting correctly (see screenshot). I've tried selecting them so I could delete them, but I haven't had any luck. Any ideas?
I double-checked the styles, and "Scope" is a Heading style, with the detail below being Body Text. I was able to get rid of the bookmark icons by removing the bookmarks (didn't want them to begin with!). I tried doing Ctrl + Q and updating the TOC to no avail.
I ended up removing the TOC and recreating it. When I did that, "Scope" formatted correctly. Thanks for the help, but I guess in the future when I have this happen I'll just have to regenerate the TOC.
