Laptop wont charge but battery works

Well for a couple of weeks now, my ac adapter wouldn't charge my laptop. I assumed there was something wrong with the battery so I bought a new battery, tried it out yet it still wouldn't charge so I assumed there was something wrong with the AC Adapter or the Power Jack. The battery is completely empty, when I remove the ac adapter plug from the laptop, the laptop turns off usually right away or after a few seconds (I get the orange battery signal when I remove the cable) I'm thinking there is something wrong with the power jack because the battery icon in my taskbar says "plugged in, not charging" If I remove the battery however, the Laptop will turn off.
