QuickBooks will not start after Microsoft Updates were installed

On a Windows XP Pro (SP2) system

After installing the latest updates from Microsoft the system started have the following 2 errors:

When trying to launch QuickBooks Pro the software fails to open and this is the error that I found:
The description for Event ID ( 4 ) in Source ( QuickBooks ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: QuickBooks, Returning NULL QBWinInstance Handle.
Also, when trying to open the Control Panel a dialog box opens up with the following message:
An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\windows\system\setnote.cpl
After clicking 'OK' it opens, however the Icon after the Windows Firewall is missing (gap between Windows Firewall and Windows Wireless Networks).
We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling QB Pro 2008 with no change.
Any suggestions?

Did you find this error in event viewer?
Have you tried to run the program in safe mode?

I would suggest unistalling the last updates that were made. Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Make sure to check the "show Windows Updates box"

Look at the dates on the updates. Uninstall as far back as you think you need to before the problems occurred. Uninstallers are included with each update so it should be clean and easy.

Let us know what you find pls.

Yes it was from the event viewer.
I have not tried safe mode yet.  I will try and reply shortly.
I will then uninstall the latest updates.

Make a backup copy of your data dir of QB
Perform a chkdsk /f on C: (should require a reboot)
See that helps, if not:
Remove the lastest updates (c:\windows\windowsupdate.log - will list what was installed), and see if QB comes back.

That is correct...Here is what I received from Intuit today:
Dear QuickBooks 2008 customer,
We have discovered that a recent Microsoft Windows update may be
triggering problems for some users of QuickBooks 2008 software. When
the problem occurs, QuickBooks does not open.

Common symptoms include the following:
1.The QuickBooks splash screen flashes, and then disappears.

OR

2.On launch of QuickBooks, an error message reports that the Web

Connector has failed to initialize and QuickBooks does not open.
It turns out that the Microsoft update introduced a problem in the
.NET 2.0 Framework.
To resolve this issue, please do not uninstall and re-install
QuickBooks. We do not recommend this, as it will not address
the problem.

The best thing to do is to go to the source of the problem, so you
will need to remove and reinstall the .NET 2.0 Framework. To help
walk you through it, we have provided detailed instructions in our
QuickBooks Knowledge Base that provides some easy to follow steps and
also includes additional links to the Microsoft site:
http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/knowledgebasearticle/1009275

We are continuing to work on this issue and if we find out anything
new, we will be sure to let you know right away.
Thanks for your patience,
The QuickBooks Team
