Windows 2003 Server SBS doesn't recognize external USB harddisk

I have installed Windows 2003 SBS on a HP DL380 G3 server. I tried to attach my external 1 TB harddisk but the drive cannot recognized. After pluged in the drive several times I was able to access the drive for ONE time and was able to use it. After rebooting the server I tried again to connect many times but the drive was not available anymore.

The drive is not visible in the disk manager.

What I tried until now:
- check other external USB drive (other manufacturer) - not visible too
- boot server in safe mode and delete all USB drivers

Any idea?

Try using a cable which provides USB power as well.
There is cable for USB ,which has two usb input ,one power and other is Data. Use that cable . Dont use any extender or USB switch .If power is available for the HDD use that power instead .

sounds like either the cable or the port.... I think the G3 has the port at the front? or is that the G4?....

Try using different cables, and different USB ports (front one if it has it)....

1.) the external USB device has included it's own power adapter
2.) I tested with different USB cable on different ports already
3.) the drive runs on my laptop (WinXP) perfectly
4.) there are some updates available but nothing related to this problem I think

Check if you have any other USB device is working ,
See if you can use some other usb drive with the same port .
And as sysexpert says , lastly upgrade bios and see

Hi,

I had similar problem with my HP server, Windows 2003 enterprise and USB Western digital HD but I looked the status of my drive in the Computer management/disk managenent item (control panel/admin tools) and I saw the disk there with healty status. So I right-clicked on the partition and assign a drive letter to it and it worked.

So maybe this could help somebody.

zacker69's suggestion helped

I went to control panel/admin tools/computer management and selected "Disk Management" and i was able to assign the drive letter and access the external hard drive.
