Exchange 2007 Restore from NTBackup to RSG.

I am a little fuzzy on how this works.
- Single non clustered Exchange 2007 all running peacefully on one server. Its not very big (1st storage group is about 36gb).
- Using NTBackup, I back up the First Storage group on a daily basis.
- I want to mount this backup in a Recovery Storage Group to do my restore tasks.

How do I do this? When using the NTBackup to restore the 1st Storage Group, I do not have the option to restore this to an alternate location.  This is where I am stuck.

So I establish the RSG then do the ntbackup restore? Its that restore in original location that's casuing me some concern.
Sorry for the delay. During the restore you need to specify the restore location for the file to the path of the RSG that you specify when you create the RSG.

That's where I am getting hung up. When doing the NTBackup restore process (i.e. Using the manual restore process and not the wizard), after I choose the First Storage Group from my backup set, I no longer have an option to restore it in an alternate location.

Let me elaborate using the http://www.petri.co.il/using_rsg_in_exchange_2007.htm as an example.

In the Restore the relevant items / mailbox Using GUI section of this post, steps 1 and 2 show what's casuing my confusion. Perhaps confusion is not the right word. I would say concern is a better word. Am I to understand that this will NOT restore the mailstore to its original locatin (i.e. the live and First Mail Store) but rather to the RSG I just created?
You could create a *.reg file and deploy that via group policy or logon script. But if this didn't fix your problem and you can't clear the history and open the shared folder manually without using an existing shortcut then you need to re-check permissions.

Using NT?backup when you go to restore and manage media > select to start restore > set the temp location for log and patch files to the path of your RSG database.

Yes I am using NTBackup (the Win2k3 OS backup).

So clicking on the Start Restore button will not start restoring right away but rather give me the option to define the locaiton to the RSG?

I did some looking and found someone else that posted a similar question. Does this support your 21355591 comment?

When I complete the restore using this method it pops up with another window asking me to specify the server and also with an alternate location for the logs etc. I select the location of the RSG and I'm good to go.

Sorry for the delay. I am still needing to try this solution. If you can't wait on the points, let me know and I'll close this out. If I end up w/ problems, I can create a new question.
