To my knowledge it can't be automatic, but can be done manually.
Open ITunes, select the song, right click, get info. on the middle left side you can write the song number. do it on each song.

Try this script.

http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/download.php?sc=albumizeselection

It adds track numbers to the currently selected songs and also lets you update the Album Name if you want.

Not sure if it works with the current iTunes, but it is worth a shot.

Thanks. I used this program and it worked. Then I went into iTunes and I added Disc # of, and each time I do this iTunes changes the Name of the song/whatever addeding the track number to the beggining of the Name. And each time I make a change it adds it again. So if the song was number 3 it will say "03 song name", then the next time "03 03 song name"

how can I get iTunes to stop this?

I'm not sure but if this is happening when you import the songs to ITunes do the following
Edit->Preferences->Advanced-> Import  the third checkbox should be blank, not checked.

I'm not sure at what point this was happening. So I made the change you suggested. Erase from iTunes and reimported, and now all is great! Thanks!!!

One more question if I may -
When I have several episodes of a podcast in one folder, and I'm listening on the iPod, when it finishes one episode how can I have it automatically move to the next? Currently it goes back to Music or the top menu and I have to click all the way back to the specific folder and select the episode.

Sorry, I don't have podcast but this may work
Selct the Podcast, right click, get information,info.   in the bottom right there's a checkbox "Part of a compilation" check it.  This may work

sunbio;
The original question was answered, this thread is almost a month old, please close the question. and repost the question about the podcast, most likely you're not getting any comments because is not in the heading of the question.
