Computer freezes when document opened from Windows Explorer

When opening a Word document from Windows Explorer, the computer freezes and becomes "not responding".  When opening from within Office (file > open) there are no problems. This problem does not occur constantly but is fairly common.  Do you have any ideas as to why this happens?

We are running Windows XP SP2 and on a domain.

Thanks.

Did you recently have any mapped network drives that were removed? Or did you remove a printer?

Hi,
Did you make any recent changes on the machine?? any windows update..or any software reinstallation. The best thing is to try autoruns and disable all 3rd party softwares (In the explorer tab) running on your machine.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/systeminformation/autoruns.mspx

If the machine is working fine, do the same to enable 3rd party extensions in a group and find the culprint file or software.

Hi
Unfortunately there haven't been any changes to the computers and we have HDGuard installed that stops any 3rd party add-ons.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.
