How does the tape backup know what slot to backup to for each day?
Just got a new 1x10 loader, installed and working.
before with an 8 tape loader they had 3 backup jobs in symantec, 1 for full daily backups, 1 for weekly-end and 1 for monthly
i created 3 media sets, daily backup, weekly backup and monthly backup.
Slots 1-5 i put in the media sett "daily backup"
Slot 6 i put in media set "weekly backups"
Slot 7 is in media set "monthly backup"
my question is, how does the tape loader know what slot to record each day in?
like backup is starting tonight at 8, how does it know to backup to slot1? and tuesday slot 2 and wednesday slot 3 and thursday slot 4 and friday slot5 and week-end to slot 6 and monthly into slot 7?
all the tapes are bar coded and scanned by the loader and i manually labeled them monday-friday and so forth.
the support company for the loader said I need to create different backup jobs for each day and different media sets for each day and assign the correct media set to the correct backup job?
doesn't make sense though because the 8 loader they had before was setup using the setup now?
any help will be very much appreciated.

It doesnt :)
You need to configure the jobs such that they go to specific SLOTS/PARTITIONS

If I create separate partitions do i need to create separate back up jobs?
I had all those documents already, thanks though.
i would create a seperate partition for each day? and then for each week-end day? (slots)
Cause like i said, there are 5 slots for the 5 days, so would i create 5 partitions for those?

i was hoping you would be the one to respond iamthecreator, I have read tons of your posts.
thanks.
also, I noticed that when its starting to run the scheduled backup it is counting all the data for backup, so it I guess verifies all the data THEN it backs up...what is it doing?
it takes like 12 hours to do whatever it is doing, I don't think it is backing up because the "percent complete" is still N/A, is this normal? Although the loader does show "writing".

You can create as many partitons with one or more slots in them as the lib would allow you.
You could then target the jobs on specific partitions
for example you are running a DAILY BACKUP JOB
create a job and then right click and select copy
it will create a copy if the same job
you could then create 5 copies (one for each day)
then go to the properties for each job
under GENERAL in the job properties name each job eg. MON , TUE ,WED etc
and under DEVICE AND MEDIA in the job properties in the DEVICES drop down select the appropriate partition that you want to target the job on.

It does a backup first and then does the VERIFY
the time taken by the job depends on a lot of factors

So is it better to create media sets or partitions?
whats the difference?

you need a lot of education (no offense )
You cannot create a job with out a media set
even if you do not create a media set there is one by default which will be selected for all your jobs
media sets is a logical grouping of media in order to apply Overwrite Protection and allow you to append to tapes
the tapes used by any job automatically get associated with the MEDIA SET specified within the job and hence acquire the properties of the particular media set
PLEASE DO READ THESE ARTICLES !!!!! JUST HAVING THEM WONT HELP YOU

your right, its been many many years since i last worked with Backup Exec and prob didn't have all the features that it does now.
I really appreciate your responses, been very helpful.
I can now get this setup and done the right way
one more question
what is "retention media before backup"?
is that something that needs/should be done?
Iamthecreator OM
It tightens the tape on the reel inside the cartridge and you dont have to do it before every backup.
Remember the times when we had audio cassettes and the tape would sag or loosen then we would put our finger in and tighten it.
Select this option to have Backup Exec run the tape in the drive from beginning to end at a fast speed, which helps the tape wind evenly and run more smoothly past the tape drive heads. Retensioning is primarily for Mini Cartridge and quarter-inch cartridges and is not supported on most other types of tape drives.

Again thanks for your help.
Is it normal for a 198gig backup to take 16 hours?
