SIOCGIFFLAGS: Device not configured
I have an OpenBSD firewall and need to reconfigure the network settings "live" on the machine.  From the command prompt I entered:

ifconfig em1 169.237.245.155 255.255.255.240

the system returned:

SIOCGIFFLAGS: Device not configured.

I've been able to do this on another OpenBSD box (version 4.3), but not this one (version 3.9).

What is your securelevel - if this is high enough then network address change is disallowed, see "man securelevel"

try ifconfig inet 169... mask 255...

make sure you are at console, sometims flushing and re-entering routes is more helpful

post a dmesg, and a ifconfig -a.

my guess is that your ethernet devices are named differently on this box. it's not linux kid, everything isn't eth(n) :-)

We're at securelevel = 1.

ok, your securelevel is fine and your syntax is correct as well, but your dmesg has been over written by errors. Can you reboot this box and send a fresh dmesg?

Do not reboot - give us /var/run/dmesg.boot contnets.

uid 25 writing /var means you have internal sendmail problem. take care to claean up mail queues to free some inodes *before* reboot.

Here are the contents of dmesg.boot

i.e - does my ifconfig work - it should make no change in if address and return no error.

that doesn't make sense. Your hostname.em1 shows a netmask of 255.255.255.240 and the ifconfig shows the netmask at 255.255.0.0.

Could show the contents of /etc/mygate and the output of netstat -rn

I just want to know if "ifconfig" as such works.
Same way I could ask to do ifconfig lo0 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
/var out of inodes means vi will not work, logs will not rotate etc...

I just got confused when I thought you answered my question. I didn't realize that you were asking him to run the command, "/sbin/ifconfig em1 inet 169.237.247.155 netmask 0xfffff000" I thought you were telling me the output of /etc/hostname.em1. this machine does have some problems. I'd love to see the output of df as well.

Namely - output of # df -i /var

The reason I want to run the iconfig program is to change the network config on an interface.  I discovered that the hostname.em1 file had the following entry:

inet 169.237.247.155 255.255.240.0 NONE

However, the subnet our upstream interface is connected to is 169.237.247.144/28, so I edited hostname.em1 to equal:

inet 169.237.247.155 255.255.255.240 NONE

Since editing the hostname.em1 file won't take affect until the firewall reboots, which I want to avoid since it's in production, I tried to use the ifconfig command to change its settings live, which is when I ran into the "SIOCGIFFLAGS: Device not configured" issue.

Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Unix is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system originally developed in 1969 at Bell Labs. Today, it is a modern OS with many commercial flavors and licensees, including FreeBSD, Hewlett-Packard’s UX, IBM AIX and Apple Mac OS-X. Apart from its command-line interface, most UNIX variations support the standardized X Window System for GUIs, with the exception of the Mac OS, which uses a proprietary system.
