HP Photo and Imaging error

Hi,
A client called having experienced a problem with HP Photo and Imaging on her XP Home computer. Version 1.1 was installed. The HP KB documented the problem she was experiencing w/ 1.1, but offered no viable solution except basically to live with it.

As version 2.0 was available, I attempted to install that version on top of 1.1. It would not install, producing a message stating (paraphrasing here) "A newer version of software for the product you are attempting to install is already installed on your computer". So I took the next step and uninstalled version 1.1, then attempted to install 2.0. Now the setup program for version 2.0 crashes with "Internal Error 2343". I also tried installing version 2.2 from CD, and a version I downloaded from HP. They all crash with the same error.

I researched this error and carried out some registry editing recommended by Microsoft, which was supposed to remove some remnants of the previous version left behind after uninstall. This did not resolve the problem. I also used the Windows Installer cleanup utility, as recommended by Microsoft, yet Photo and Imaging was not listed.

So far that is all the recommended solutions I have been able to find. I hope someone has experienced this problem and has a solution to offer.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for responding. The HP solution is similar to but more thorough than the one I tried from Microsoft. Your solution specifies more registry locations for installer info. I will try it ASAP and post the results.

Fantastic, one of the alternate solutions in the document worked so that I can now install HP Photo and Imaging successfully.

But get this: I install version 2.2 from a CD, it says it is installing 2.2, and when finished it says 2.2 installed successfully. However, when I go to Help and About HP Photo and Imaging, it says it is version 1.1. The whole reason I got in the situation was that I uninstalled 1.1, including deleting the folders from the drive containing the executable for the program, which the uninstall program did not delete. Why does it not say 2 or 2.2?
cool, the alternative also worked for me in the past (and for some reason i was only able to find it under polish version of hp site, even though the article in english)

not sure why it says 1.1 in the help about, i suppose different modules might report different versions.  does the newly installed version solved the original issue she was expiriencing?

Yeah I noticed the polish site, no wonder I couldn't find anything searching the US site.

Your solution did resolve the install issue I was having. Unfortunately I was hoping to upgrade to a newer version and perhaps resolve the original issue, and that didn't happen. Maybe the "upgrade" changes were so minor that no one at HP remembered to change the version number in the Help About section. It certainly looks no different.

Thanks for the help.
