Photoshop CS won't start; gives a bunch of "Can't load default ... because of disk error" messages
On WS2003, we have a multiuser license for Adobe Creative Suite. We run the Adobe apps from a bunch of Neoware thin-client terminals, under Terminal Services and Citrix Metaframe. We've been using this setup for years, and it has worked fine.
InDesign is still working fine. Photoshop won't start from the terminals, however. When you launch it, you get this series of error messages:
Could not load default brushes because of a disk error.
Could not load default swatches because of a disk error.
Could not load default gradients because of a disk error.
Could not load default patterns because of a disk error.
Could not load default contours because of a disk error.
Could not load default styles because of a disk error.
Could not load default custom shapes because of a disk error.
Could not load default tool presets because of a disk error.
Unable to continue because of a hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable.
Background to this: At first, Photoshop stopped working from the terminals with an error message about the scratch drive being too full. A disk cleanup solved that problem, but then we were getting the error messages above.
A possible factor in all of this is that this particular system is a complete mess (set up by consultant who didn't really know WS2003 or Citrix), and I've been trying to clean up and rationalize the file permissions, which are one of the worst parts of the mess. It is possible that I did something to the permissions that kicked this problem off. The yearbook staff, who use Photoshop, often don't tell me for several weeks when something isn't working, so it can be hard to pinpoint the time of onset of the problem.
Interestingly, Photoshop starts up just fine on the console (logged in as Administrator), which leads me to believe the problem is somewhere in the Citrix config'n or the interaction of Citrix with file permissions.
Disk config'n: The hard drive is partitioned into M: and N: drives. M: (12 GB with about 3 free) has all the system stuff (including page file), and is shared in its entirety. N: (62 GB with 30 free) has the Adobe CS program files as well as the "students" fileshare--and lots of other stuff.
What I've tried: Uninstalled Photoshop CS and reinstalled it from the CD. (I kept config'n data, so maybe that was a mistake.) No effect on the problem.

Great tool!
Thanks--worked beautifully. Problem solved.
Photoshop needed read access to the root of the drive. (Seems an odd way to program an app, but there you have it.)
