MS Outlook produces error: Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004011D) : 'The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.'
Server SBS 2003
Client: MS XP ver 2002, SP2
today, my Outlook began producing the error below whenever it trys to send/receive mail.
Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004011D) : 'The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.'
To resolve the issue, I have done the following:
1. Added the server name to the /etc/hosts file (192.b.c.d sbsservername)
2. In Outlook on the client, I verified that the "Send mail immediately" was selected.
I also turned it off, re-started outlook, and the problem persisted. I selected the option again and restarted Outlook. The problem is still occurred.
3, on the server, I reset the mail settings by rerunning the CEICW
Since these actions did not resolve the problem, I'm at a lost. Any direction?
Thanks

Was Outlook Working before? Has anything recently been changed?
Do you have the latest Office SP installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en
Can you send / recv in safe mode:
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /safe
Can try the following Outlook 2003 Command Line Switches:
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /cleanprofile
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /cleanrules
Might also be possible that the pst is causing the problem, see if ScanPSt helps:

Outlook was working well. Neither SBS or XP have not been changed... that's what makes this strange.
This could not have happend at a worst time. We're in the mist of creating a ton of work SOWs and hardware bids, so we must fix this ASAP.
I will try your solution and read sstofflet's article.
thanks for the help guys

OK, here's an update.
outlook /safe -- did not work (DNW).
outlook /cleaenprofile - DNW - I created a knew profile but the problem persisted.
Outlook /cleanrules - DNW - This seemed to have run but it did not have an effect.
After the above I...
1. reinstalled outlook
2. re-ran CEICW because I receieved the error that the POP3 MMC had an error.
"MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC"
3. Rebooted server
Ran outlook on client and it did not work. Also I could not access mail via web access.
I execute the suggestion for sstoufflet via the start - control Panel - Mail.
Outlook started and did not crash after creating a new default profile. however, none of the Tools -options - Mail setup buttons works. I also saw, but did not write down, other profiles with "Exchange SID-number" names. I wasn't sure if I needed to delete these so I left them as is.
SP3 has a tremendous amount of upgrades in many areas. I did not want to add to the variable set, so I did not upgrade the client to SP3.
Though outlook is up, I cannot attach an OST or an older pst file to it. I thought this would be viablebecause one must create a new pst file during the Control panel - mail process. I ran scanost and scanpst on the orignal ost and previously connected pst files. Though no errors were found, I can't connect either type of file b/c of the issues with the buttons in the Mail setup area.
Any ideas?
Thanks

This there a way to up the points on this question? We are in the mist of creating a low of SOWs and bids for customers. We use email a part of our tracking systems. At this point all email is out. We tried using our laptops but once we plugged into the network and logged on, the problem persisted.
