I have a need for a SSD (in a laptop) that once the OS is installed, the drive cannot be written to...ever again. (don't ask ^_^)
The type of drive I'm referring to can be seen below.

While these do have physical write protect switches, they are not 2.5" laptop drive form factor and the capacity is much more limited (topping out at 8GB, which -should- be enough for most operating systems)
Not really a reply sorry but just thought I would point it out...
Once power is removed, the RAM disk and its contents are gone.
The boot drive (SSD) essentially acts like a CD-ROM (but much faster and with no moving parts). It will boot a linux live cd image (or even a windows live image (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/).

Can you be more specific on which OS will be installed? I'm not trying to kill your dream, I'm just wondering if you're chasing a ghost.

Storage devices include any device used for storing and retrieving digital information. Hard disk drives (HDDs) use one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. The primary competing technology for secondary storage is flash memory in the form of solid-state drives (SSDs), but HDDs remain the dominant medium for secondary storage due to advantages in price per bit and per-device recording capacity. CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable) is a digital optical disc storage format that allows information to be stored outside the mechanical HDD.
