2.5" SATA "Solid State Drive" with PHYSICAL write protect switch?
Does anyone know if there are any 2.5" SATA solid state drives (SSD) out there that have PHYSICAL write protect switches?

I have a need for a SSD (in a laptop) that once the OS is installed, the drive cannot be written to...ever again. (don't ask ^_^)

The type of drive I'm referring to can be seen below.

Yay, responding to my own question...

While these do have physical write protect switches, they are not 2.5" laptop drive form factor and the capacity is much more limited (topping out at 8GB, which -should- be enough for most operating systems)

Hi, you probably have you reasons, but the OS will need to write to the drive even if its just for swap and temp files.
Not really a reply sorry but just thought I would point it out...

The idea is a laptop which no actual writable storage. For swap/temp files there will be a RAM disk.
Once power is removed, the RAM disk and its contents are gone.

The boot drive (SSD) essentially acts like a CD-ROM (but much faster and with no moving parts). It will boot a linux live cd image (or even a windows live image (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/).

As droyden pointed out, the OS will want to update files. For example, in addition to temp and swap files that can be mapped to another drive (ram disk, etc), Microsoft OSs update timestamps for when a file is accessed.

Can you be more specific on which OS will be installed? I'm not trying to kill your dream, I'm just wondering if you're chasing a ghost.

Unlss you had some other plan, I'd suggest splitting the points between droyden and bmsjeff. They were the first two to respond. My comment came two weeks after jrhagan made his last comment.

Storage devices include any device used for storing and retrieving digital information. Hard disk drives (HDDs) use one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. The primary competing technology for secondary storage is flash memory in the form of solid-state drives (SSDs), but HDDs remain the dominant medium for secondary storage due to advantages in price per bit and per-device recording capacity. CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable) is a digital optical disc storage format that allows information to be stored outside the mechanical HDD.
