Symantec Backup Exec 12 remote agent problems

I  recently upgraded to Backup Exec version 12 (from version 11d).
I did not have any problem trying to install the agent remotely to the exchange server.
I try to make a backup of the mailboxes information store public folders
But when the back-up or test is running the agent stops on the exchange server. The backup log reports Error: e000fe30, the job failed with the following error: A communications failure has occurred.
In the Exchange server event log under system I get an event ID 7034 : The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service terminated unexpectedly.

The event viewer of the exchange server says:
"Event ID 1000, Category (100).
Faulting application beremote.exe, version 12.0.2364.0, faulting module MAPIProv.dll, version 12.0.1364.0, fault address 0x0000a485

Both back-up and Exchange server are running Windows 2003 + SP2 Server.

I installed all the backup exec updates and hotfixes and also SP1

I also tried to reinstall the remote agent many times but no success

And I tried to make a fresh back-up job but that don't work either

Can anybody help?

Is by any chance tobit installed? If yes, check the instructions on the following Link:

try changing the backup job to use GRT for exchange and try again. let me know if you were able to successfully complete a backup.

i did not have any issue when upgrading to 12 but i have herd that this fixes the problem. have you tried un-registering and re-registering the dll?

ASKER

I tried GRT on and off but no diference. Also tried the dll but no success.
With a test run it runs longer but at the end the remote agent services crashes
Last night I tried to reinstall the remote agent quietly with setupaa.cmd and setupaofo.cmd in the root of remote agent folder but no solution.

Backup still fails
I'm getting exactly the same problem. I'm going to call veritas direct, and see what they have to say. i'll update you with what i find.
https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=installations&message.id=322

that was all i could find on the symantec site for your problem but it looks like you have tried all the solutions there.

good luck with symantec support not that great
I spoke to Veritas and they advised me to use GRT, and un-select "enable legacy mailbox support" in the general options section, in backup exec.

They also advised me to go into the job itself, exchange options, and un-select "perform consistency check", and ensure Advanced Open File option is not being used.

I'm running a backup now, so i'll give you an update when its complete.
yeh thats what i read try with GRT is meant to fix the problem
I tried GRT, and un-select "enable legacy mailbox support" in the general options section, in backup exec.
and un-select "perform consistency check", and ensure Advanced Open File option is not being used.

but the backup still fails and the agent crashes

I'm having this very same problem, but with version 11d.  I think that Backup Exec is the cause since I can perform a backup of Exchange using the NT Backup utility without any issues.

When I skip the public folders with the backup the remote agent doesn' anymore crash.
Now I'm going to look into the public folders permissions
I made the backup exec logon account owner of every public folder
And the remote agent does't crash with a test run. Looks good

Tonight I'm going to run a full backup. I will let you know
Problem solved.

Backup runs fine. And no crashes anymore

It was a permissions issue with the public folders

Everybody who helped many thx

un-select "enable legacy mailbox support" solved the issue
