OWA works fine in firefox, but gets "page cannot be displayed" in IE 6 and 7

Right, so I built 2 identical Exchange 2003 servers recently, both running on Win2k3 R2 and have the latest service packs and updates.

One of the servers stopped responding to OWA requests but only when users connect via Internet Explorer.  Firefox works without any problems.

Both servers have identical configurations (i.e. absolutely standard) but one works with any browser and one doesnt.

I've read through all the related EE problems I can find a solution to this problem.  I have tried messing about with the authentication etc with no results

please help!

Check your settings for IE.  Firefox doesn't use ActiveX but Internet does.  This could be where your problem lies.  Check your group policies for that.

Also, Firefox has an extension called IE Tab.  Download that extension and then open OWA in firefox again.  RIght click anywhere on the page and select the "View in IE" option.  If you get the "This page cannot be displayed", it's a group policy for ActiveX that's your problem.

Here's the link for that extension

Also, if users have subfolders in their Inbox, and use firefox for OWA, their going to need that extension to view the subfolders, or use IE 6/7

will try that now

it happens with my IE at home (version 7), IE in the office (on all computers - version 6) and at every other computer Ive tried (both in the office and out) running IE.

oh.. i have another exchange server sitting next to it, running exactly the same settings (all default) and IE can get into it without any problems

surely that means it's not my browser causing the problem?

Check your forms based and SSL (if any) Settings for your OWA.  This can be the cause of your problems.

I'm not using SSL, or form based authentication.

any other ideas?

You said you have 2 Exchange Servers.  Is this setup for a FE/BE topology?  If it is, you need to put the forms based authentication on the Front End Exchange Server.  You should also put the SSL certificate on there too

nah people are accessing the server direct rather than FE/BE topology

funnily enough, if i include the local domain name (when users are in the office) it works via IE and Firefox

e.g.  "http://server.domain.local/exchange" works when "http://server/exchange" doesnt

any more ideas? im puzzled

I just changed the HTTP port for the default website to 800 instead of 80 and now it works fine in both IE 6/7 and Firefox

I change it back to 80 and it works in firefox normally, and IE if you include the local domain name after the server (http://server.domain.local/exchange)

ideas anyone?

How is this considered a solution?  Maybe a workaround, but certainly not a solution.
