AOFO error in backup exec/shadoe copy components

Dear Experts,

please bare in mind that i am relatively new to this program and very beginner hence you may have to be specific when telling me to enable or disable things for the time being.

I have a file server backup which runs every evening, at the same time, it seems to work smoothly usually, it will sometimes run fine for 10 backups in a row but suddenly stop working for 2 or 3 days, work again for some time then not work a day, and so on, although it is the same backup which seems to bug at times....

The error which i receive is the following:
final error:0x8007000e ran out of memory

V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports out of memory
V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "System?State". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports out of memory.

that' s all i can say for the moment, please let me know if more information is required, many thanks in advance

How mucn memory do you have on the server?  What other applications?  Are they memory intensive?

It looks like you are running out of physical memory.

We use HP 800GB(compressed) C7973A tapes

the server has 1GB of ram, it doesn't seem saturated/slow but it does run AD, DNS, DHCP and a file server, backup up occurs for three drives C/D/E , E being the HD with around 500GB to backup.

hence we come to around a backup of 730.000.000.000 to 760.000.000.000 bytes daily, i'm not sure of the effective space on these tapes but it seems it can very due to the files which we back up which can compress well or sometimes less well (different type of files).

But i doubt the problem to be the tapes because Backup exec continues on a second tape when one is not sufficient (which sometimes happens).

the server doesn't seem saturated at all, 46 processes running, and from what i see at quick glance CPU usage varying from 0 to 5%....

shadow copying seems off on these drives... though i don't know if this is relevant..

I think this might help a lot.... see below... some files can't be opened...

Backup- JEP-SRV3-HASV-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports "Out of memory".
V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "D:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports "Out of memory".
V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "E:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports "Out of memory".
Backup- C: Unable to open the item C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINDOWS\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINDOWS\Temp\JET14A7.tmp - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINDOWS\Temp\JET3A.tmp - skipped.
The skipped files are normal - these are files in use by the server.

I have some more observations, it seems the shadow copying is off indeed and the allocated spaces are as 13999 for c 75000 for d and 10828 for e drive.

what i don't understand is,
1-is this failing because this option is off? if so, why does it normally work? more than it does not....? considerin the fact that we have three servers and the options seem the same on each after verification, and this one is the only one causing this error, every now and then...
2-what about the limist of the allocated spaces for shadowing? are they calculated according to something?

thanks a lot
