Graphics Card: Code 10 "this device cannot start"

One of my older machines running W2K pro began giving me a code 10 error (device could not start) after making an attempt at adding more RAM to the computer.  At that point I tried reinstalling the drivers but it didn't fix the problem.  Knowing that I'd be reformatting the computer and upgrading to XP pro the next day made me feel certain that the problem would resolve itself, but still no change and same error.  I installed latest drivers from Nvidia without resolution.   And now since this is an old machine anyway,  it run incredibly slow because of the graphics problem

These errors are often caused by excessive loading on the data and address lines for the memory subsystem ... usually when you have installed 4 modules in an unbuffered desktop motherboard.

If you have 4 modules installed, try removing 2 of them -- if it's a board that supports dual channel memory operation be sure you leave one installed in each channel so it doesn't revert to single channel mode.

Another thing that can really cause a system to run slow is if the disk is operating in PIO mode => look at the Advanced tab on the Properties page for each of the IDE controllers in Device Manager to confirm that you're using DMA transfers.   If not, post the details and I'll tell you how to resolve that.
